The presence of huge start-up costs or other impediments which blocks new competitor from leisurely joining an area of business or industry. Barriers to entry is an advantage of existing companies which are already conducting carrying out operations in an industry because it protects the profits and revenues of an already established company from being robbed by new competitors.
