CUSTODY-ONLY TRADING
System in which shares can only be traded if the holder’s name appears on the stock certificate. This trading requires any stock purchases or transfers placed through the issuing firm’s transfer agent. The agent cancels the shares from the seller and releases a new share certificate for the same number of shares to the buyer. Companies use this system to be protected against naked short selling.
