INCIDENTS OF OWNERSHIP
Interests or rights an individual maintains in an asset such as an insurance and property, which permits the individual to alter, use, or take advantage of the asset. This is significant in determining state taxes. A person can deduct the size of his estate by giving the assets to beneficiaries. But in order to avoid estate tax on the gift, the initial owner must not keep any incidents of ownership in the gifted assets.
