LEGAL SEPARATION
A court order of living apart, with the rights and obligations of divorced individuals, but without a legal decree. Both parties can live apart as unmarried persons but cannot remarry until they got divorced. A legally separated couple must still deal with the usual divorce-related issues such as alimony, child custody, child support, and property division. Individuals undergo this arrangement to save the marriage or to hold religious objections to divorce.
