MERGER ARBITRAGE
A hedge fund strategy by which the stocks of two joining firms are purchased and sold simultaneously in order to generate a riskless profit. A merger arbitrageur looks at the risk the deal won’t close on time or at all. Due to slight uncertainty, the target firm’s stock will usually sell at a discount price that the combined firm will have when the merger closes. The arbitrageur generates profit from the discrepancy.
