TAX-EXEMPT INTEREST

Interest income exempt from federal income tax. Somewhat a misnomer, the income is still taxed at local or state levels. It is also subject to the alternative minimum tax. Also, capital gains on tax-exempt investment are still taxable, not the interest on these instruments. In the United States, these are reported to both taxpayers and the Internal Revenue Service on Form 1099-INT. In turn, taxpayers must declare this on Form 1040.
