DOUBLE TAXATION
Taxation principle in which a tax is levied more than once on the same source of income. It occurs since companies are considered independent legal entities from their shareholders. Like individuals, firms pay taxes on their annual earnings. Shareholders who receive dividend payments has already incurred income-tax liabilities although the income which provided the cash to pay the dividends were taxed at the corporate level.
