GEMOLOGY
Combined art and science of studying, cutting, valuing, purchasing, and selling precious stones. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are some of the most precious stones gemologists deal with. It is spelled gemmology outside North America. Some jewelers are academically trained gemologists that are eligible to determine and assess gems.
