JONESTOWN DEFENSE
A defense tactic where the target company partakes in an activity that might ruin the firm rather than avoid the hostile takeover. Also called suicide pill, it often leads to the death of the target. The term was taken from the Jonestown massacre in 1978 where a religious cult, the People’s Temple headed by American religious leader Jim Jones, committed mass suicide in Guyana.
