MONETARY RESERVE
A government's stockpile of foreign currency and commodities like gold and silver. These are used to back up the national currency and provide cushion for administering central banking functions such as adding to the money supply and settling foreign exchange contracts in domestic currencies. Generally speaking, the bigger the monetary reserve, the better the nation is capable in engaging in transactions with foreign countries.
