PAINTING THE TAPE
Painting the tape is a market manipulation in which market players try to influence the price of a security by buying or selling it between them, to create the appearance of a significant trading activity in the security. Securities and Exchange Commission doesn’t allow this kind of activity because it makes mock prices for a security. The term originated in a past era when stock prices were mostly transmitted on a "ticker tape."
