PIIGS
An abbreviation used to refer to the five Eurozone countries which were considered weaker economically after the financial crisis: Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain. Since these nations use euro as their currency, they were not able to employ independent monetary policy to help battle the economic downturn.
