SPECIALIST
A specialist, in financial terms, is someone that is a member of an exchange whose purpose is to serve as a market maker for the facilitation of the a given stock’s trading. Some of what a specialist manages are the stock inventory, limit orders, ask and bid prices, and trade executions. In case of a large shift in demand, a specialist may manage the large movement by using stocks out of his or her inventory to meet the demands, if there is a demand for either a buy or sell, so that balance may be restored and the gap, narrowed.
