SUBPRIME MELTDOWN

Situation which affected the mortgage industry in 2007 because of approving individuals with poor credit rating. The housing boom in mid-2000s and low interest rates pressed several lenders to offer home loans to individuals with poor credit rating. As a result, there was a sharp increase in high-risk mortgages that defaulted. Many lending institutions and hedge funds also collapsed. After the real estate bubble died, many borrowers were not able to settle their payments on their subprime mortgages.
