SURRENDER FEE
Fee levied to an annuity investor for withdrawing funds from an annuity or insurance contract before its maturity, or for cancelling the agreement. The charge serves as an economic incentive for investors in maintaining their contract, and allows the insurance firm to justify expectations for the frequency of early withdrawals. Also called surrender charge.
