BUTTONWOOD AGREEMENT
Agreement, between 24 of the first and most well-known brokers in the United States, indicating the creation of an investment community of Wall Street (later called the New York Stock Exchange). Signed in 1792, the term indicated these brokers would only deal with each other and set a commission rate of 0.25%. The agreement was said to occur under a buttonwood tree.
