CATASTROPHE SWAP
Financial instrument allowing insurers to guard themselves against hefty losses due to major catastrophe. Traded in the over-the-counter derivatives markets, two parties, the insurer and the investor, swap streams of periodic payments. The insurer’s payments are based on a portfolio of the investor’s instrument. The investor’s payments are based on possible natural disaster losses as postulated by a catastrophe loss index (CLI).
