CESSION
Transferring portions of the obligations to a reinsurer in an insurance firm’s policy portfolio. Risk can be transferred to the reinsurer either proportional or non-proportional. Proportional pertains to an arrangement in which the insurer and reinsurer share a percentage of both premiums and losses. Non-proportional refers to a system in which the reinsurer pays off only when losses exceed the agreed-upon amount.
