INTERIM CEO
An individual appointed by a company’s board of director to temporarily act as the chief executive officer (CEO) during a transition period or when a CEO suddenly leaves. The person may be an internal or external candidate. The term "interim" is added before "CEO" because the individual has not officially been offered the title of full-time CEO. Like many industry leaders, interim CEOs are chosen to stabilize the company in times of great turmoil.
