JUNK BOND
A slang term that refers to a high-yield or non-investment grade security. Standard & Poor’s graded the bond BB or lower, while Moody’s ranked it Ba or below. The fixed-income security has higher default risk but speculative appeal because it is a risky investment that yields higher earnings than safer ones.
