RESIDUAL EQUITY THEORY
An accounting concept that states that common stockholders take the greatest risk when they buy into a company; thus, they should have sufficient information about the financial standing and performance of the company to make wise investment decisions. Residual equity is calculated by subtracting the claims of bondholders and preferred shareholders from total assets of the company.
