The Smokestack Industry is the term given to the ‘old economy’ businesses that has been around for decades called such because they usually were heavy manufacturing industries whose factories emitted large amounts of smoke into the atmosphere. It is characterized by businesses that have limited potential for long-term growth such as automobiles, steel, and chemicals.
