ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION NETWORK - ECN
Automated system matching buy and sell orders for securities. The network links individual traders and major brokerages so they can trade directly between themselves without a middleman or broker. As a result, order entry and execution process are done quickly and easily. ECN generates money by charging a fee for every transaction. The Securities and Exchange Commission mandates ECNs to register as broker-dealers.
