EXPLORATORY WELL
Deep hole a petroleum or natural gas firm drills hoping to find a new source of fossil fuel. It represents a risk for the firm drilling it since it is unknown before investing in the well, as well as the amount of oil or natural gas it may contain. The well may either be a profitable new fossil fuel source or not. In the latter case, it may be plugged and abandoned. Also called wildcat well.
