GREENSHOE OPTION
Clause stated in an underwriting agreement of an initial public offering (IPO), which allows the underwriter to sell more shares than initially planned by the issuer. Usually, this is done if the demand for a security issue outmatches projections and the stock trades over its offering price. The provision can render further price stability to a security issue because the underwriter can increase supply and ease fluctuations should the demand surge.
