INTERNAL RATE OF RETURN - IRR

Discount rate frequently used in capital budgeting, making the net present value of all investment’s cash flows from a certain project equal to zero. This is also used in computing expected returns on stocks or other investments. In general, the higher a project’s IRR, the project is deemed acceptable. IRR can also be used in ranking several possible projects a firm is considering. Given all other factors are equal among those projects, the project with the highest IRR most likely will be considered the most and undertaken first. Also called economic rate of return (ERR).
