LIMIT UP
The maximum price increased allowed on a commodity futures contract in one trading day. A futures contract has a maximum threshold to secure its price movement from large unexpected or possible catastrophic events that leads to irrational valuation of price levels, based on investors’ panic or manipulation. In simplest terms, this is to decrease volatility in the market, as these are mandated by exchanges where derivatives trade.
