MORTGAGE INTEREST DEDUCTION
An itemized deduction which allows homeowners to reduce the interest they pay on any loan used for building, purchasing, or improving their residence. It can also be taken on loans for secondary homes and vacation residences but with some limitations. The amount of deductible mortgage interest is stated annually by the mortgage company on Form 1098.
