BUDGET VARIANCE
Periodic measure used by entities to determine the difference between projected and actual budget for a certain accounting category. A favorable budget variance refers to gains. Conversely, an unfavorable budget variance pertains to losses and shortfalls. It occurs when forecasters failed to accurately predict the future.
