INSURANCE DERIVATIVE
Financial instrument that derives its value from an underlying insurance index or characteristics of an event in relation to insurance. Insurance firms use these derivatives when hedging their exposure to huge losses due to catastrophe and costly occurrences such as hurricanes or earthquakes.
