LEADING INDICATOR
A measurable economic indicator that changes before following a certain pattern or trend. It is used to forecast changes in the economy although not always considered accurate. Bond yields are usually a good leading indicator of the market for investors anticipate and speculate economic directions. Some other examples of leading indicators are building permits, inventory changes, money supply, production workweek, stock prices, and unemployment insurance claims.
