STOCK SYMBOL
Unique series of letters designated to each security by the stock exchange for trading purposes. Stocks listed in the AMEX and the NYSE have three or less characters; in NASDAQ, four to five characters. If a fifth letter appears, it is a security other than a single issue of common stock. Also called ticker symbols.
