SUBPRIME MORTGAGE
Mortgage offered to borrowers with low credit ratings. A standard mortgage is not given to the borrower because of poor credit rating and/or no credit history. Lenders view these individuals as having a greater than average risk of defaulting on the loan. Lending institutions often place interest on such mortgages, which is higher than a normal mortgage to compensate themselves for incurring more risk.
