DOUBLE EXEMPT
Status conferred to municipal bonds for which interest is eligible for tax exemption, either at the federal level or state level. Most states in general do not levy tax on residents on their interest income from tax-exempt bonds issued by the state, agencies, cities, or other political entities. But virtually, all states tax individuals on interest from bonds issued outside the state even though the bonds maintain exempt from federal taxes.
