JOBBER
A jargon term which refers to a market maker on the London Stock Exchange before October 1986. Also called stockjobbers, jobbers had shares on their own books and made market liquidity by acquiring and trading securities, as well as matching investors’ buy and sell orders via their brokers who don’t have the permission to make markets. It also pertains to a small-scale wholesaler or middleman in trading retail goods.
